Budget Cuts and Sheriff’s Staffing Impact

Massive cuts to the Sheriff Department crippled services to county residents in 2009 and had a devastating impact on your safety.

"...The [Sheriff's] Department has seen a spike in violent crime and a dramatic reduction in the number of proactive arrests made by its deputies. Our patrol deputies no longer have the free time to dedicate to proactively looking for bad guys. They are too busy running from one 911 call for service to the next..."

- Sheriff John McGinnes
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Press Release
April 27, 2010

The slide below shows the Sheriff's Department Field Staffing Levels compared from 2008 to 2009.   To put it into perspective, here is what the cuts mean to each and evey citizen of Sacramento.

What This means...

  • Increased response time to 911 calls for service
  • No response to certain calls for service
  • Directed to website to file report or told no officers available to respond
  • Drastically reduced proactive vehicle and pedestrian stops and investigations
  • Reports not taken and criminals not taken to jail
  • Dramatically reduced number of detectives to investigate crimes for victims
  • SWAT Officers unavailable to respond to high priority and risky call-outs
  • AERO Detail grounded except for certification flights. Unable to respond and assist officers on calls, pursuits, wanted subjects, etc.
  • K9 Officers unavailable at times to respond to calls
  • POP Officers eliminated resulting in NO proactive long term solutions to continuing problems within the community

As you can see by the slide below, Field Staffing was drastically cut by 45% while calls for service increased by 3%.

Below is comparison between proactive policing of the Sheriff's Department from 08/09 to 09/10.   As you can see there were dramatic reductions in the number of suspicous or occupied vehicles stopped DOWN 39%...Suspicous Persons DOWN 37%...Vehicle Stops DOWN 45% and Arrests DOWN over 25%.  What does that really mean...

Your Safety is at Risk!  Suspicous vehicles and people aren't being stopped as much...resulting in less criminals being sent to jail.

Below is a LIKE comparison between the City of Sacramento and the Sheriff's Department deployed in the field.  Total deployed sworn officers in Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is over 40% less than Sacramento Police Department.

In Sacramento County, there are 0.63 deputies for every 1,000 residents....in the City of Sacramento, there are over DOUBLE the amount of officers at 1.34 for every 1,000 residents.

In the final slide below, it shows the National Average of some comparable departments within California that have TRIPLE the number of officers than Sacramento County has.

Each and every resident in Sacramento County should be very afraid and concerned for their safety and that of their family's.  You need to let your County Supervisors know that you don't want any more deputies cut.  Tell them to invest in your safety today!
